Crowns are there to support teeth that don’t have too much tooth tissue left. A bridge is a similar treatment but can incorporate a false tooth as well to fill in a gap.

Straighten teeth

Fix broken teeth
Crowns and bridges are a bit more complicate treatments when we need to fix the teeth a bit more or when we are trying to hide a gap in your mouth. These appointments take a little bit longer but are similar in that we always give you enough anaesthetic so you wont feel any pain and you can have as many breaks as you need.
These appointments we use technicians to help us create the teeth and so impressions or scans are sent off to the lab and things are usually back a week or so later to be fitted.

Crowns & Bridges FAQs
Are crowns permanent?
Crowns can last quite a long time, but really nothing can last forever. Crowns usually last around 10-15 years so they are a great treatment for fixing a broken down tooth.
Do they hurt?
They do not hurt and when we prepare them, we can give you anaesthetic just to make sure nothing hurts.
How long do they take?
A crown takes about an hour to prepare and then we send the impression or scan to the laboratory to make the crown. Within 2 weeks they send it back for us to fit. During that time, you wear a temporary crown which you can use as you would the new crown.
Can I change the colour of my teeth?
You can pick whatever colour of crown you would like. If you want your teeth whiter than they are already, then we would whiten your teeth before fitting the crown and then make the crown the colour of the whitened teeth. When doing the crown, the dentist will talk to you about this as we need to decide on the colour before fitting the crown.
Can they come loose?
Crowns should not be loose. If they have been in a long time, they might be at the end of their life and you might need a new one. The cement we use to glue them in can come loose or if there is decay under the crown, some of the tooth underneath might have been damaged. We can usually check with an appointment or using an x-ray to try and see around the tooth.
What is a post crown?
A post can be used if there really isn’t much tooth left and we still think we can use what is left to create a tooth. A post is something that goes into the root of the tooth and then also into the crown, and both are cemented in at the same time. The root needs to be root filled (or already be root filled) as we need to use the space where the nerve is. If we are considering a post crown, it is usual that the tooth is already quite broken down and so a root filling is often in the plan already. We sometimes need to use a core around the post which is a bit like a filling to give us more for the crown to fit onto.
How much do they cost?
Crowns start from £550 and around £319.10 on the NHS. Things like posts and cores cost a little bit more, but the dentist will always go through all of the plan with you including the costings so you know what is happening. Not all types of crown are available on the NHS.
What are they made of?
Crowns can be made of a metal like gold, a base metal or a white metal, and also made of ceramics. The newer ceramic materials mean that we can replace broken down teeth with materials that look so much like teeth that you would never know they are not completely your own. The decision on what the tooth looks like usually depends on what we make it out of.
