Tooth coloured fillings
When you come into the surgery, we will go through what we are going to do that day and make sure nothing has changed for you since we last saw you.
If you don’t like needles, then we have a few tricks up our sleeves. We can use different materials depending on whether you need more complicated work or whether you want the fillings to look like your other teeth and be tooth coloured. Things usually take just less than 30 mins and if you are numb we’ll remind you just to be a bit careful with hot drinks and eating just until the anaesthetic wears off. If you need a few, we can usually do a few at a time to keep your appointments to a minimum as we know that no one actually wants to see us too much!

FILLINGS FAQs
What is a filling?
A filling is where we clean in the tooth that is damaged from decay or because an older filling needs replacing and then place another material to fill in the gap. We can use varying materials and a lot of the time you can choose.
What colour are they?
We can have tooth coloured fillings or can use metal ones which are slightly cheaper. We can match them to your teeth or costs. The dentist will let you know what is best for your teeth and then you can decide.
How long do they take?
It can take anything from 15 minutes to an hour to fix a tooth. It usually depends on how much tooth is damaged and how much tooth we have to work with.
Can I go to work after?
Absolutely! You might be a bit numb so you might need to be careful with hot drinks and eating for a few hours but other than that, things should be fine.
How long do they last?
It really does depend on how big the filling is and what it is filled with. We usually say around 10 years, but the dentist will be able to let you know. If you have a high sugar diet, any restorations in your mouth will not last as long as sugar allows the decay to destroy things quicker. Keeping your teeth really clean and reducing sugar makes things last longer.
How much are they?
Fillings on the NHS have a set fee of £73.50 but there are some restrictions. Regular prices fillings cost from £100-£180 depending on the size of the filling and type of material.
Can they cause decay?
Fillings themselves do not cause decay. Decay is bacteria destroying the tooth substance and as fillings are just a material filling in a gap, they cannot cause decay. A well placed filling, with a low sugar diet (bacteria feed on sugar) can mean that the fillings can last as long as they can, before bacteria cause some more decay or the fillings breaks from another cause.
